1/1/2019 Connie Monks

To start off the New Year, we would like you all to meet Connie Monks (second from left in photo), one of the last living founding members of OFAS. She helped shape the first aid squad to what it is today. Connie first heard of the newly forming organization in 1953 from a neighbor who lived across the street. Along with her neighbor, Connie decided to take the mandatory courses and joined the squad. Connie, along with many other founding members, oversaw and guided the creation of OFAS, has rode as an EMT on the squad for 22 years and continued her service as a lifetime member for over 46 years. Over her time on OFAS Connie has served on multiple committees and held a multitude of positions including serving 3 different terms as Chief, being chairman of membership. From the beginning she has overseen and helped shape the squad. As one of our founding members she holds many stories to what the squad used to be like and how it all started. If you would like to read more about our founder Connie Monks please see our facebook page!

11/10/2018 John Robert Walker’s Birthday

The John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid has come a long way throughout the years since our early start back in 1954. It all started thanks to the Walker family and memory of their son, John Robert Walker. Back in 1954 Oakland did not have a First Aid Squad and was completely reliant on its neighboring towns for emergency care. During this time, John Walker was a councilman in Oakland and his youngest son, John Robert Walker, was diagnosed with leukemia, and he required frequent transportation to Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. When John Robert Walker passed away at the age of nine, his parents, Vivian and John, turned tragedy into triumph by helping to organize a living memorial to their son. In memory of their child they helped create the Oakland First Aid Squad and even generously donated an equipped Cadillac ambulance to the town on August 14, 1954. In spirit of the recent passing of John Robert Walker’s birthday on November 10th, 1942 we would like to sincerely thank the Walker family for aiding in the creation of the Oakland First Aid Squad that is able to a plethora of people throughout the town whenever they are in need.
